What is a Capsule Endoscopy?

A capsule endoscopy (often called a “pillcam“) is a breakthrough, non-invasive diagnostic procedure designed to evaluate the parts of your digestive tract that traditional scopes cannot easily reach.

Instead of passing a flexible tube down the throat or through the bowel, you simply swallow a small, smooth capsule roughly the size of a standard vitamin pill. As the capsule travels naturally through your digestive system, an integrated miniature camera takes thousands of high-definition images, transmitting them wirelessly to a recording device worn on a belt around your waist.

When is a Capsule Endoscopy Recommended?

While gastroscopies and colonoscopies are perfect for evaluating the stomach and the large bowel, the small intestine is several meters long and highly coiled, making it difficult to reach. A specialist will typically recommend a capsule endoscopy to:

• Investigate Obscure GI Bleeding: Pinpointing the exact source of unexplained blood loss or chronic iron-deficiency anemia when standard endoscopies have returned normal results.

What to Expect From A Capsule Endoscopy?

1. Simple Preparation

Just like a standard scope, the camera needs a clear view. You will follow a clear liquid diet the day before and take a mild laxative solution to ensure the small intestine is completely clear of debris.

2. Ingesting the Capsule

Arriving at our Gold Coast clinic in the morning, our medical team will fit a comfortable, lightweight recording belt around your waist. You will then swallow the capsule with a glass of water. It is specially coated to glide smoothly down your throat.

3. Your Day Uninterrupted

Once swallowed, you are free to leave the clinic. The pillcam moves naturally through your digestive track via normal muscle contractions (peristalsis), taking multiple images per second. You can drive, walk, and return to light, routine daily activities. We will let you know exactly when you can resume drinking liquids and eating a light lunch.

4. Data Download & Specialist Review

After approximately 8 hours, you will return to our clinic to have the recording belt removed. Our specialists will download the data, compiling the images into a video. A gastroenterologist will meticulously analyze the footage to pinpoint any underlying issues.

Q: How do I pass the capsule? Do I need to return it?

A: No, you do not need to retrieve or return the capsule. The pillcam is strictly disposable. It passes naturally and painlessly out of your system during a normal bowel movement, usually within 24 to 72 hours, and can be safely flushed away.

Q: Can I feel the capsule moving inside me?

A: Not at all. The capsule is completely smooth and smaller than many large vitamin tablets. Once you swallow it, you will not feel it moving through your stomach or intestines whatsoever.

Q: Are there any restrictions while wearing the recording belt?

A: While the test is running, you must avoid strenuous exercise or heavy bending that could dislodge the sensor belt. You must also stay completely away from strong magnetic fields, meaning no MRI scans or walking near metal detectors on the day of your test.
